10 aftercare tips for your Tattoo in Bali

Getting a Bali tattoo while you are traveling is a the perfect way to capture you travel experiences. We recommend scheduling your tattoo for a time when you are not planning on extended beach time, diving or surf trips for the next 2 weeks. Sunbathing and swimming is a no go for fresh tattoos! For many people the end of their traveling appears as the best time to get some ink.

The main focus on tattoo aftercare is to protect your tattoo from infection. To let it heal quickly without scarring and loss of color and quality.

Depending on the size of the tattoo and your skin condition the healing process takes between two and four weeks.
In the first days, redness and bruises around the affected areas are normal. You will also experience ink and wound fluids coming out.
Due to the healing process scabbing appear and the skin can get a bit itchy. Don't pick or scratch!

After we finished the work on your tattoo, we clean, disinfect and cover it with a plastic wrap. Now it is on you to take care of your new piece of body art. Follow the instructions below to provide the best tattoo aftercare for your Bali tattoo.

  • Go home!

The bigger the tattoo the more important it is to give your body time to rest and to start the self healing of your skin. Tonight is not the time for a big party night out! Sorry.

  • Open the plastic wrapping after max. 2 hours or after you come home.
You want to protect your new tattoo from dirt, pollution and germs for the first hours, but then it is important to open the plastic. Your skin can not breathe under the wrapping and it starts sweating. Warm and sweaty wounds are a wonderful surrounding for unwanted bacteria. Also, the sweat will transfer the ink out of the skin. It fades.
Do not wrap your tattoo again.

  • Wash your tattoo after removing the wrap.
In Bali the quality of the tap water is unstable we recommend rinsing the water with drinking water. Remove dried blood and ink carefully, but don't soak your tattoo in water. You can use only clear water or mild, unfragranced soap like green soap.
Dry your tattoo after cleaning it.
Use a clean towel or paper towel. Gently tab it dry. No rubbing!

  • Apply an tattoo aftercare product.
Make sure your tattoo is completely dry. Wash your hands and apply a thin layer of aftercare product, but don't overdo it, if you apply a thick layer of aftercare product the skin cannot breathe anymore. That has a negative effect on the healing process and the ink easily comes out of the skin.
A good aftercare product has an antiseptic effect, supports wound healing and keeps the wound moisturised to reduce scrapes and protects them from cracking.

  • Wash your hands, always befor touching your new tattoo

  • Repeat the aftercare until the tattoo is fully healed. Do it twice a day. If it got dirty, give it an extra round of cleaning and aftercare product. .

  • Don't pick at the flaking/scabbing skin! It causes delay of healing, fading of colours, scars and increase the chances of infection.

  • Don't expose to the sun! Really don't do it! Keep your tattoo covered and in the shade. Intense sunlight increases fading of ink (not only on new tattoos)
Do not apply sunscreen on a tattoo in a healing process.

  • Don't go swimming! Water can contain bacteria witch can cause inflammation and it can have a negative affect on the healing process. You can have a quick shower, but you can not go swimming neither in the sea nor pool until the tattoo is completely healed.

  • Don't overdo it with sports, don't wear tight clothes, don't touch the tattoo with dirty hands, don't shave the tattooed area.

Please keep in mind that all aftercare advice we give are general suggestions based on our experience and knowledge.
Personal conditions like sickness or allergies can affect your healing process.

Compared to machine tattoos, traditional tattoo techniques such as handpoke and hand tapping are much less invasive.

They heal much quicker and you can go swimming after a couple of days.

For that reason, you might consider a traditional tattoo technique as the right choice for your Bali tattoo. But it is still a wound and you still need to give it a thorough aftercare like explained above.

If you have any doubts or worries about the healing process, please don't hesitate to contact us or consult a doctor.
